Chapter 39

Jess landed in Denver midafternoon. As the pilot taxied to the gate, she listened to her messages. Among them, Armando asked her to call him back.

Jess sorted through the people she’d met on the Rooney case. She finally remembered that Armando was the taller of two men she’d met at the gathering after Rooney died. Armando and Darrin worked in the IT department with Rooney at First Aurora Bank.

Jess redialed his number.

He answered after a couple of rings with a lighthearted, “Yo!”

“It’s Jessica Kimball, Armando,” she said.

His voice changed. “Right. Thanks for calling. I was…I mean…well, given the circumstances, it seems odd.”

Jess blinked. “I’m sorry. I’m lost. What are you talking about?”

“Lucy.”

“Who’s Lucy?”

“Justin’s replacement at the bank. Lucy Cranfield,” Armando said, as if Jess might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer.

After a minute, Jess remembered. “Lucy? The girl I met at the Mellon Tree after Rooney died?”

“Yeah. She didn’t come into work today.” Armando’s concern was plain.

“People get sick, take time off, have a holiday,” Jess said reasonably.

“Not Lucy.” Armando disagreed. “Don’t think she’s missed a day for any reason for years.”

“Did you try to call her?”

“No reply. And I knocked on her door at lunchtime. Nothing.”

“What door? At home, you mean?”

“Yeah,” Armando stressed, as if Jess should know exactly what he meant. “I couldn’t get inside. I mean, she’s got heavy shades on her windows, and I don’t have a key. Sorry.”

Jess was running out of suggestions. “Okay. Have you checked social media?”

“Zip since four o’clock yesterday afternoon. She’s not addicted to socials or anything, but it’s not normal for her to miss that much time,” Armando said.

“Have you checked with folks around the bank?”

“Of course,” Armando replied. “No one’s seen or heard from her since she left last night. After the thing with Rooney, I’m just a bit worried.”

“Sure. That makes sense,” Jess said. “Have you talked to the police?”

“Don’t they say to wait for a missing person forty-eight hours or something?”

There were probably a million reasons why Lucy might skip a day’s work, but like he said, under the circumstances Armando’s worries seemed appropriate.

“Send me Lucy’s address. I’ll check around. And this isn’t a normal situation. So call the police. They have better ideas and a lot more resources.”

As soon as they hung up, Armando sent the address. Jess looked it up on her phone while she was waiting to deplane at the gate.

Lucy lived two streets away from Justin Rooney’s apartment. Hers was a ground-floor unit on an average apartment block. Not new but not old. Pictures showed a pool and a fitness room.

The same company owned Rooney’s building. Which meant Jess would encounter the same “no cooperation if you’re not family and don’t have a warrant” policies if she tried to inquire about one of their residents.

She was off the plane and behind the wheel of her Jeep soon after landing. A thirty-minute drive brought her to Lucy’s apartment.

From her position on the street, Jess saw the building was three stories. According
